The secrets behind our tuned blade discs for robotic lawn mowers
By Tobias Blohberger, GreenGears3D
Robotic lawnmowers are no longer a rarity in our gardens. They make gardening much easier and ensure a well-kept lawn. But how exactly do these little helpers work? A crucial factor is the blade disc - the heart of the robot.
1. The creation of our mowing discs
Our cutting discs are not left to chance. On the contrary: Each blade disc goes through a precise development process to ensure maximum performance and efficiency. Here is an overview of the steps:
a) CAD design and product development
Our blade disc is based on a weight-optimized yet stable CAD design. In order to achieve the highest level of perfection, we use the finite element method (FEM). This allows us to determine the optimal material thickness for particularly stressed positions. Not only aesthetic aspects are taken into account, but above all a high level of functionality. Particular attention is paid to ensuring that grass clippings cannot easily accumulate on the blade disc and thus lead to imbalance. The focus is on weight, performance and stability.
b) Material selection
We use technical plastics that are optimized for the intended purpose. These are suitable for long-term outdoor use, have increased tensile strength and impact resistance, and are UV and temperature resistant. We source the materials for additive manufacturing exclusively in Germany and Austria.
c) Practical test in the appropriate robot
The optimized blade disc is tested in a suitable robotic lawnmower. Only if it fits perfectly and achieves the desired performance will it go on sale.
2. Number of blades
The number of blades is crucial for the cutting result. We deliberately chose 7 and 9 blades, and for good reasons:
- Avoid resonance vibrations : Similar to propeller machines, the blades are installed in an odd number to minimize resonance vibrations. This is how we achieve a precise cutting pattern.
- Resource-saving and inexpensive : Our customers benefit from the compatibility of the blade disk with the original blades as well as with the knife blades that offer two fastening options (holes). These can be used up to four times. By simply turning the blade or changing the fastening hole, it is usually possible to use each side of a blade before it has to be disposed of. This means that you have to replace fewer blades despite the optimal cutting pattern.
- The golden mean : From a number of 7 blades, the difference to even more blades is minimal and can hardly be seen in the resulting cutting quality of your lawn. We have consciously chosen the optimal balance between performance and sustainability.
Conclusion
Our mowing discs are the result of precise planning and years of experience. They are the key to powerful robotic lawnmowers that will take care of your garden in no time. Discover the world of tuning blade discs and take your robotic lawnmower to the next level!
